Credits & License
Understand RenamerX billing rules, including when credits are used, what happens when they run out, and how license state changes product access.
Credits & License
In RenamerX, credits govern free-plan AI suggestion generation, and license state governs whether Pro-only capabilities stay available on the current device.
First rule: credits are tied to successful suggestion generation
For free-plan usage, credits are checked when RenamerX actually starts generating a new suggestion, not when you click import.
| Operation | Uses a free credit? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Import files or folders | No | Import only adds supported files to the current workspace and queue. |
| Unsupported or temporary files being skipped | No | Skipped items never enter the real AI pipeline. |
| A file successfully reaching a new suggestion | Yes | This is the main credit trigger. |
| A processing attempt that fails before suggestion generation completes | No | The reserved credit is returned on failure. |
| Apply | No | Apply writes the rename or move, but does not consume a new AI credit. |
| Undo | No | Undo restores the filesystem state and does not consume a credit. |
| Retry that successfully generates a fresh suggestion | Yes | A new successful suggestion is a new AI operation. |

Free-plan rules
- 50 free AI credits per monthly cycle.
Credits do not reset every day. Free-plan users see remaining credits and plan state in Preferences.
What happens when credits run out
When the free monthly credit limit is exhausted:
- New AI work that still needs suggestion generation cannot proceed.
- The affected file fails with a billing-related error instead of staying stuck in Pending.
- Already suggested items can still be reviewed, applied, or undone because those actions do not require a new AI suggestion.
In practice, exhausted credits block new generation work, not every action in the app.
Pro-plan rules
Pro unlocks:
- Unlimited credits.
- Watch Folder creation and start.
- Auto Apply.
Those features are not just UI decoration. They are enforced by the app's billing gates.
License state and product impact
| License state | What it means | Product impact |
|---|---|---|
| None | No active license is stored for this device. | App behaves as Free. |
| Active | The current device has an active validated Pro license. | Pro features and unlimited credits are available. |
| Revoked | The license was invalidated upstream, such as after a refund or revocation event. | App falls back to Free behavior. |
| Expired | Validation failed beyond the allowed state, or the license is otherwise no longer valid. | App falls back to Free behavior until validation succeeds again or a valid license is restored. |
Activation, validation, and deactivation
Activation
Activate a Pro license from Preferences by entering the license key for this device.
If the key has already reached its activation limit, activation fails until one device is deactivated or the license limit changes upstream.
Periodic validation
RenamerX performs occasional license validation:
- A background revalidation is needed roughly every 24 hours while a license is active.
- After a successful validation, the app grants an offline grace window of about 7 days.
Short-term offline work is usually fine, but long-term offline use is still governed by the license rules.
Offline grace behavior
If validation fails because the network is unavailable, RenamerX keeps the active state during the grace window. After the grace window expires, the app can fall back to Free behavior until the license validates again.
Deactivation
Deactivating the license on this device:
- Clears the local device activation state.
- Returns the app to Free.
- Removes access to Pro-only features on that device.

Practical guidance
- Stay on Free while testing templates and one-time cleanup work.
- Upgrade when you need steady throughput or Watch Folders.
- Activate the license before production automation, not in the middle of a rename run.
